Shivananda B.S. wins chess championship

International Master Shivananda B.S. of Karnataka lifted the championship trophy at the three-day All India FIDE Rating Chess Tournament organised by Lions Club of Belgaum-Midtown, Belgaum District Chess Association and the United Karnataka Chess Association. It concluded here on Tuesday.

According to Vasanth B.H., chief arbiter, fourth seed Raghunanadan K.S. of Bengaluru played Queen’s pawn and third seed Shivananda replied Modern Benoni in the final round. Shivanada’s inaccuracy in the 23rd move landed him into a pawn down position.

In the 29th move Shivananda lost a pawn. Raghunandan enchased this opportunity and won the game in 39th move.

Shivananda, Sameer Kathmale, O.T. Anil Kumar and Raghunanadan scored seven and half points each. But based on the tie-break, Shivanand, Sameer Kathmale (Maharashtra), Anil Kumar and Raghunanadan (both Kerala) were given the first to fourth places, respectively. All the four players scored 7.5 points (seven and half).

S. Ravi, Commissioner of Police, distributed the prizes to the winners.
