Shivamogga student's stunning show

Ranjan sets record in the State by scoring 625 on 625

B.S. Ranjan has set a record in the State by scoring 625 out of 625 in SSLC for the first ever time since the board’s inception in 1966. But the boy from the small town of Bhadravati in Shivamogga district — incidentally Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar’s home district — does not fit the image of a “bookworm”.

He never went to tuitions and did spend a lot of time playing and discussing cricket — his favourite sport — with his friends. In fact, his word of advise to students is that achieving academic excellence need not be at the cost of all else.

Excerpts from an interview with The Hindu :

What was your study schedule?

I used to study from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. and for four hours in the evening. The mind is in a state of tranquillity in the morning and I feel it is the best time to study. I used to work mathematics during the morning session.

Do you feel that tuitions are inevitable?

Not at all. However, students who have problems in comprehending subjects may go for additional teaching sessions.

There is a notion that involvement in extracurricular activities mars academic performance.

I don’t agree at all. Students should learn to strike a proper balance between studies and extracurricular activities. I, for one, am a great follower of cricket. I love to play and watch the game. In fact, involvement in extracurricular activities will enhance confidence among students.

What role did your teachers and school play in your success?

I am highly indebted to my teachers. It is because of their motivation and moral support that I was able to fare well. A lot of online learning material is available now, but nothing can replace a good teacher. There is an ambience necessary for comprehensive development of the personality of students in the school.

Your success has also debunked the stereotype that academic success is prerogative of students from cosmopolitan centres.

We have heard of many success stories of students from rural areas making it to civil services. Success is the prerogative of only those who work hard.

Did you receive support from your family?

I am from a middle class family. Both my parents extended great support to me. My mother used to take care of little things, even of what I have to eat during exams. I am really glad that I have done my parents proud.
