The newly formed Karnataka Federation of Sheep and Goat Farmers will soon market sheep and goat milk, Karnataka State Sheep and Goat Development Corporation chairman Pandit Chidri said in Bidar on Monday.
Studies have found that sheep and goat milk is nutritious and good for health. It has a niche market in big cities, though there is a need to create awareness about it to increase the market potential, he said.
“Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced the formation of the federation a few months ago. The cooperative body will work on the model of the Karnataka Milk Federation. It will collect milk from sheep and goat rearers and sell it under a cooperative brand,” Mr. Chidri said.
He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for Kuri Bhavan, a building to house the corporation office. The government will build Kuri Bhavans in districts with high concentration of sheep and goat farmers, he said. The federation will also sell sheep and goat manure, wool and other products. The government has released Rs. 5 lakh each to the 600 sheep and goat farmers cooperative societies, he said.
Bharatbai Kodambal, zilla panchayat president, Vijay Singh, MLC, Baburao Alure, director of the corporation, Ganadheeshwar Hiremath, assistant director of the corporation, and others were present.
