Seven passengers were killed and more than 20 injured when a private bus rammed into a stationary lorry on the outskirts of Sira at Tumakuru district on Sunday night.

The police have identified the deceased as Anusha (7), Savitha (21), Ratnamma (38), Sumalatha (21) and Girijamma (50), all from Pattanayakanahalli, Sira, and Shankar (35) from Jyothinagar, Sira, and Ashwathnarayana (40), Sira.

All of them had gone to Singanduru Chowdeshwari temple in Shivamogga district on May 19 and were returning to Sira when the accident occurred.

The private bus rammed into the stationary lorry parked on the left side of the NH-48 on the Hiriyuru-Sira Road around 11 p.m. on Sunday. All passengers, who sat on the left side of the bus, have either been killed or sustained serious injuries, police said.

The injured are being treated at Tumakuru district government hospital.

A case has been registered at Sira police station.
