The Students’ Islamic Organisation of India, (SIO), Karnataka zone, has urged the government to set up a regulatory body to monitor the fee structure in professional unaided colleges to prevent colleges from collecting excess money in different forms. A group of students from R.V. Engineering College, Bangalore; Basavakalyan Engineering College, Bidar; and Proudadevaraya Institute of Technology, Hospet, has drafted a ‘model act’ highlighting the changes required in the Karnataka Professional Education Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fixation of Fee – Special Provisions) Bill, 2013. They plan to submit it to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande shortly.
SIO State zonal president Thouseef Ahmed on Tuesday said they had also sought regulation of admission and seat matrix in private unaided professional colleges and fee regulation and fixation of non-exploitative fee (prohibition of capitation fees). “The MCI and the AICTE insist on certain infrastructure for medical/engineering colleges. Under this circumstance, allowing some colleges to charge more fees for providing additional amenities creates a feeling of inequality among students,” he said.
