Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has again requested the Prime Minister to instruct those concerned for constituting Standing Finance Committee to operationalise classical status to Kannada and help the State derive benefits for promoting the language at the earliest.

He said the Government of India had by a notification conferred classical language status on Kannada and by virtue of which classical Kannada language is entitled for benefits to develop the language.

The benefits are - two major annual international awards for scholars of eminence in Kannada; a centre for excellence for studies in Kannada and creation of Professional Chairs of Kannada Language in central universities under UGC, Mr. Yeddyurappa said in a letter to the Prime Minister.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said he had already addressed three letters to the Prime Minister on December 31, 2008, October 29, 2009 and February 11 last year, requesting that the ministry concerned be directed to take up follow-up action to set up the Committee to operationalise the scheme.

Requests were also made to the HRD, Ministry of Culture and Director of Languages for setting up the Committee and to take all further follow up action to extend benefits admissible for the Classical Language status given to Kannada.

“In this connection, as you are aware already more than two years have elapsed since according of classical Language status to Kannada and no benefit has accrued consequent to the Government of India order,” the letter said.

The people of Karnataka in general and Kannada Literary personalities in the State in particular are feeling let down for the delay in implementation of Classical language status given to Kannada, he said.

“I therefore once again request you to kindly bestow your personal attention and suitably instruct the concerned for constituting Standing Finance Committee for operationalising the classical status given to Kannada language and help us to get the benefits for the promotion of the language at the earliest,” he added.
