Set up IIT in Dharwad, MLA urges government

March 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - DHARWAD:

Hubballi-Dharwad West MLA Arvind Bellad has urged the State government to set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Dharwad.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, he said that the case for Dharwad as a location for the IIT had been made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani. Now it was up to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Higher Education Minister R.V. Deshpande to ensure that the institute comes up here, he said. Mr. Bellad suggested setting up the IIT on 500 acres of land belonging to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board near Mummigatti.

“Dharwad has been a centre for the growth of industries. It has a suitable climate, connectivity, infrastructure, and educational environment which makes it an ideal location for an IIT. Establishing an IIT here will also help address the problem of correcting regional imbalance. Bengaluru already has an IIM and an IISc and is overcrowded,” he added.
