March 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - Udupi:

The Udupi Zilla Panchayat will organise a seminar on Karnataka Panchayat Raj Amendment Bill 2015 at the District Offices Complex Hall here on Saturday.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Savita Kotian, president of the zilla panchayat, said that the Ramesh Kumar Committee, set up by the State government, had made far-reaching recommendations for strengthening the three-tier Panchayat Raj system. This Bill would be debated in the next session of the State Legislature.

The committee had made a thorough study of the zilla panchayats, taluk panchayats and gram panchayats. It had given its recommendations for strengthening the taluk panchayats, which had been for long complaining that it neither had powers nor funds at its disposal.

The gram panchayat too would be significantly strengthened. The recommendations made by the committee had been incorporated in the Bill. The objective of the seminar was to discuss the proposed Bill thoroughly and given any suggestions, if necessary, to the government, to further strengthen the Panchayat Raj system.

All the elected representatives from MPs, MLAs, MLCs to members of zilla panchayats, taluk panchayats and gram panchayats had been invited to participate in the seminar.
