Water conservationist Rajendra Singh has said that development projects taken up by private companies and industries in the last six decades have exploited groundwater resources to the maximum.
Interacting with people here recently, Mr. Rajendra Singh said that the government should take the consent of the people before taking up development projects and beautification works around tanks and lakes.
To deal with the water crisis in Kalaburagi district, Mr. Rajendra Singh appealed to people to take steps to conserve and preserve groundwater resources. The best way to address the water shortage is to adopt water management techniques such as minimum use of water, recycling and reusing waste water for industrial purposes, he said.
Mr. Rajendra Singh said that NSS volunteers from the colleges can be involved for conducting workshops on water harvesting regularly at the taluk level.
Environmentalist and writer Nagesh Hegde said that nature has bestowed people with sufficient amount of groundwater for drinking, but drinking water sources have dried up because of undue exploitation of groundwater.
Mr. Nagesh Hegde held the industrial sector responsible for exploiting groundwater to the maximum. The government should impose a ban on drilling borewells for industrial purposes.
