Hundreds of schoolchildren and the public participated in the International Day of Yoga programme held at different locations on Thursday.

Schoolchildren participated in the event organised by the district administration at the district stadium. The students performed yoga under the guidance of district physical education officer Venkateshamurthy. The demonstration continued for one hour and the students performed many asanas.

Preetham J. Gowda, Hassan MLA, said yoga was necessary to maintain good health. “Everyone should do yoga at least for half-an-hour a day,” he said.

The MLA praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking steps to popularise yoga across the globe. Because of his efforts, yoga had been recognised worldwide, he said.

Zilla panchayat president Shweta Devaraj, CEO G. Jagadish, Additional DC B.R. Poornima and others participated. Similar programmes were held in all taluks. Many schools conducted programmes, where students performed different asanas.
