‘Scholars must help build cultural awareness’

December 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 12:39 pm IST - LAKSHMESHWAR (GADAG DISTRICT):

Scholars who were involved in historical and cultural research should set themselves the larger goal of reaching the outcome of their research to the common people to create cultural awareness, which was badly lacking in our society, eminent archaeologist A. Sundarahas said.

Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Inscriptions and temples of Lakshmeshwar’ organised by the Infosys Foundation as part of the inaugural function of the renovated Someshwara temple complex here on Monday, Mr. Sundara said one of the main reasons for India losing a large portion of its heritage was the lack of cultural awareness among the people. It was the responsibility of research scholars to take up the cause of creating cultural awareness in the society, he said.

Activities in the field of cultural and historical research would fail to receive support, if the people were ignorant about it. If people were aware of the importance of their cultural heritage and need to preserve and conserve them, the task of the researchers and conservationists would become easier.

Mr. Sundara also released a Kannada book on the inscriptions of Lakshmeshwar. Research scholars and historians presented papers on topics related to history and culture. Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murty and Archaeological Survey of India former regional director S.V. Venkateshaiah were present.
