Minister for Housing and district in-charge M.H. Ambareesh on Friday said that the State had decided to establish a satellite town near Thubinakere industrial area on the outskirts of the city.
Speaking after unfurling the Kannada flag at the Visvesvaraya stadium here to mark Karnataka Rajyotsava on Friday, Mr. Ambareesh said the proposed satellite town will be established in an area of 700 acres. The State government has already implemented several development projects in the district. To tackle traffic congestion on the busy Bangalore-Mysore Highway, the State is contemplating constructing either a flyover or a bypass to the city, Mr. Ambareesh said.
The district in-charge Minister said that the government has planned to improve living conditions of slum dwellers; to supply pure drinking water to the areas facing acute shortage of water; and to develop the State-owned Mysore Sugar Company Ltd. (Mysugar) and Pandavapura Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane (PSSK) in the district.
Star of the show
Ramya, MP, was the centre of attraction at the programme. School students rushed in droves to shake her hand and get autographs.
Several organisations hoisted the Kannada flag, offered tribute to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari and distributed sweets.
Slip-ups
Hassan Staff Correspondent writes:
A written speech that was read out by Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, at the Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations here on Friday, turned out to have some glaring mistakes — it even got the names of Jnanpith award-winning Kannada writers wrong.
According to the script he read out poet Gopala Krishna and theatre personality B.V. Karanth as Jnanpith recipients. Interestingly, Chandrashekhar Kambar, the latest recipient of the award, was missing from the list. The Minister remembered only two poets — Kuvempu and G.S. Shivarudrappa — while listing personalities who were honoured with the Rashtrakavi title. M. Govinda Pai, the first poet to be honoured with the title, was not mentioned.
That aside, the Minister listed popular schemes launched by the government in his speech, and hoisted the national flag.
