Permits to transport sand will be issued online from next month, said Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare.
Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Khare, said a meeting to discuss the matter had decided to issue sand permits online. These permits could be verified at check-posts.
He said global positioning system (GPS) devices in sand transporting trucks was a must; those without this compulsory device will be denied sand permits. The trucks, equipped with GPS devices, can be tracked by personnel manning the police control room here, he said.
On the illegal extraction and transport of sand in the district, Mr. Khare said sand was illegally transported in the night, and therefore police teams conducted raids then, at places where the trucks usually plied. “Intensifying checks and raids at night is the only way to stop illegal sand transport,” he replied.
To another query, Mr. Khare said that more than 600 trucks were seized last year, for illegal sand transportation. Cases were booked against the guilty.
