The Yettinahole Yojane Virodhi Samiti on Monday staged a dharna outside the office of the Assistant Commissioner in Sakleshpur against the Yettinahole Integrated Drinking Water project.

Condemning the State government for going ahead with the project despite opposition from local farmers, the protesters demanded the government stop project-related works immediately.

The committee came into existence recently after the government began road formation and ground clearance works to implement the drinking water project. Kishor Kumar, one of the conveners of the committee, said the agencies which had bagged project-related works through tender had begun work on private land, without informing the farmers. “The government did not hold a public hearing before taking up the project. The worries of local residents have not been heard. Besides, the government has not assessed the impact of the project on the environment,” he said.

The protesters raised slogans against Assistant Commissioner S.S. Madhukeshwara for making them wait to submit the memorandum.
