The Mandya Zilla Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti has announced a district-wide “jail bharo” agitation on Monday against the release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu.

An upset G. Made Gowda, samiti president and former MP, has requested one person per family in the district to participate in the “jail bharo” protest.

Speaking to presspersons here on Sunday, Mr. Gowda termed Chief Minister Jagadish’s Shettar’s government a “foolish government”.

“We had congratulated the Chief Minister when he assured us of not releasing water to Tamil Nadu as the farmers here are reeling under severe drought. However, he broke his promise by releasing water at midnight,” Mr. Gowda said.

Everyone, who is concerned about our farmers’ community, should participate in the protest. But, they should not seek help to get released from jail. Such people need not participate in the protest, Mr. Gowda said. He added: “We will intensify protest demonstration across the district.”

Resignation

Mr. Gowda called upon elected representatives in the district and the MPs from the State to tender their resignation for the cause.

Meanwhile, the samiti has called an emergency meeting of farmers’ leaders and elected representatives from the Cauvery basin here on Monday morning to discuss its furutre course of action.

Meanwhile, Maddur MLA Kalpana Siddaraju said she is contemplating tendering resignation to support the ongoing Cauvery protests.
