The Samajwadi Party (SP) would vote against the bill to create Telangana by bifurcating Andhra Pradesh in the event of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre making such a move in Parliament.
Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav told presspersons here on Sunday that he was against carving out new States. The experiences of dividing Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Assam have not been good. At one point it might lead to the division of the country itself, he warned.
Mr. Yadav said that being large in size would not affect the growth of any State and noted that Uttar Pradesh, being the largest State, has been leading the country in development. He congratulated Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy for taking a tough stand against the division of the State. He was participating in Iftar organised by his party’s Karnataka wing president and MLA C.P. Yogeshwara.
Meets KJP chief
Meanwhile, Karnataka Janata Paksha president and former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa met Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav in the evening. The meeting took place at the Iftar hosted by Mr. Yogeshwara. Mr. Yeddyurappa arrived just after media persons left the venue, sources said. They added that the meeting, attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, lasted about 20 minutes.
