Sale of baby girl comes to light in Pavagada taluk

May 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - TUMAKURU:

The case of a baby girl being sold has come to light four months after the incident at Boopara Tanda in Pavagada taluk of Tumakuru district.

Child Development Project Officer Usha had gone to the tanda on Friday to review food distribution to children and mothers by anganwadi, when she learnt that a baby was not given food for the past four months. She was told that the baby’s mother had refused to take the food. Ms. Usha then contacted the mother, Soundarya, who told her that her husband, Ramachandra Naik, had allegedly asked her to kill the baby she was carrying if it turned out to be a girl. The couple already had a daughter.

To save the baby, Ms. Soundarya, with the help of another woman, Lakshmamma, her mother, and aunt, sold the newborn girl to a person in a footwear shop near Pavagada bus-stand.

Ms. Usha has registered a complaint.
