‘Sakhi’ building likely to be ready by October

It will provide assistance to women affected by violence

The foundation stone for the construction of the “Sakhi” building — a one-stop centre for providing medical, legal and rehabilitation facilities for women affected by violence — will be laid near the State Home at Nittur soon.

The Union government has sanctioned one Sakhi One-Stop Centre each in all States. In Karnataka, it has been sanctioned at Udupi. Already, the Department of Women and Child Welfare has reserved five cents of land at the State Home premises. Gracy Gonsalves, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare, said they have received Rs. 37 lakh from the government for the construction of the building. It is expected to be ready by September or October this year.

The centre will be open 24x7 for women affected by all forms of violence, including sexual assault, dowry harassment, acid attack and domestic violence. The operations have already begun from a temporary quarters at the State Home. It can be reached through the helpline number 181.
