SAAP chief pitches in for sports university

Mohan says he will seek guidance of sports personalities on the issue

Efforts will be made to set up a sports university in Andhra Pradesh and a detailed proposal will be sent to the State government soon, said Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) Chairman P.R. Mohan here on Wednesday.

Speaking to media persons at IGMC Stadium, he said Acharya Nagarjuna University, SAAP and the Ministry of Higher Education would jointly come up with the proposal. “We will be seeking the guidance of sports personalities like P.T. Usha, Anju George, Shiny Wilson, Ashwini Nachappa, V.S.S. Laxman, Pulella Gopichand and others in setting up of the university, exclusively for sports. The proposal will include syllabus, number of departments and place required for the varsity,” he added. He said the works were in progress in the mini stadiums in Krishna Districts at Pedana, Jaggaiahpet, Nandigama and Tiruvuru and asked the engineers to construct the stadiums as per norms, He also said every year the SAAP will conduct sports meets at the mandal, district and State levels for media both print and electronic and DWCRA women. Taking a dig at Police Commissioner A.B. Venkateswara Rao for organising food court at the football ground at the IGMC Stadium in the nights, Mr. Mohan appealed to the top cop to reconsider his decision as the place was meant for players to play.
