The Karnataka High Court will hear from June 3 petitions on collection of excess fees by private schools, not following norms prescribed in the Right To Education Act, and problems in payment of salary to staff in private schools, among others.
Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh said the Department of Public Instruction, which was directed to hold a seminar on these issues to arrive at a consensus involving stakeholders, had not conducted the event properly. The court asked counsel for schools, parents, the Union and State governments, and the Central Education Boards to submit their suggestions on these issues.
The court, which has expressed a prima facie view that all private schools have to provide free education to the children up to the age of 14 as per Article 21A of the Constitution, will hear the contentions of the schools besides hearing arguments on steps to be taken for effective implementation of Article 21A.
