The district administration has appealed to the State government to release Rs. 58 crore to address the problem of drinking water scarcity, which might surface in rural areas during summer, Deputy Commissioner V.P. Ikkeri has said.
It had been planned to address the drinking water crisis by taking up schemes like digging new borewells in villages facing drinking water crisis or drawing water from nearby water bodies with the government grant, he told The Hindu.
In all, 1,031 villages in the district had been identified as prone to drinking water scarcity during summer. The Shivamogga Zilla Panchayat had drawn up a plan of action to address the problem. Measures would be initiated to provide drinking water to affected villages through tankers till a permanent solution was evolved, he said.
The State government had sanctioned Rs. 50 lakh each to all taluks to address drinking water problem, Mr. Ikkeri said.
