Deputy Commissioner Srirangaiah has said that a Rs. 40-lakh proposal has been submitted to the government to provide basic facilities to Dalit families in Konigarhalli village in Challakere taluk of Chitradurga district.
Speaking at district vigilance committee meeting here on Tuesday, he said that the amenities included cement concrete roads, safe drinking water, street lights, and drainage facility.
Atrocities
“These families have been deprived of basic amenities for decades and they are victims of atrocities,” Mr. Srirangaiah said.
There are also plans to provide cattle to these families as promised by the district administration a few months ago.
Mr. Srirangaiah said that a proposal was submitted to the Minor Irrigation Department to prepare an estimate for providing irrigation facilities.
Irrigation facilities
The department had given a Rs. 34-lakh proposal. As only Rs. 22 lakh was available with the authorities, the officials should start the work only with the available funds.
Committee member H.C. Niranjanmurthy said banks in the district should be instructed to provide loans to members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for construction of houses under different government schemes.
Harassment
He alleged that the banks were harassing Dalits who approach them seeking loans for construction of houses.
“The Lead Bank Manager should be issued clear instructions for sanctioning the loans by collecting required documents,” Mr. Niranjanmurthy added.
Sites
Social Welfare Department Officer Manjulamma informed the meeting that steps had been taken to provide 30x40 sites to Dalit residents in Budihalli village and steps would be taken to provide other facilities in phases.
Superintendent of Police M.N. Anucheth, zilla panchayat N. Manjushri and District Vigilance Committee members Y. Tippeswamy, Naganaik and Ramesh were present.
