The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for Rs. 38.91 crore, the funds for which would be provided by the Union government, for a comprehensive solid waste management.
Making a presentation at the monthly meeting of the municipal corporation here on recently, Joint Commissioner C.W. Shakeel Ahmad said that the annual maintenance cost of the project would be Rs. 4.18 crore while the corporation would be able to generate almost the same amount of revenue through selling segregated waste, production of vermicompost and other means.
Mr. Ahmad said that the plan was to provide the services of an auto tipper for every 1,000 households in all the 67 wards of the municipal corporation. Initially, 31 auto tippers would be deployed in the wards the cleaning of which was done by the pourakarmikas. “The focus would be on segregation of dry and wet waste by the residents at the generation points so that it will be easier to process the garbage. We will have 15 compactors (a machine used to reduce the size of waste material through compaction) seven in Dharwad and eight in Hubballi,” he said.
