The theft was noticed by the bank officials, S.B. Patil, Additional Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu over phone. Following a complaint by the SBI Manager Ashok, the Hatti police registered a case.

Mr. Patil said the thieves are suspected to have cut off the CCTV cable from outside before committing the offence. “There was no indication of any damage to the ATM machine” he said. A special team headed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sharanabasappa, has been formed to investigate the case.

To a question, he said that there was a total of Rs. 40 lakh in the machine a day earlier and Rs. 18 lakh was withdrawn by customers before the incident occurred.

Sniffer dogs and fingerprint experts visited the spot.
