A notorious rowdy, who reportedly has several criminal cases pending against him in different police stations, was shot at and injured in an encounter near Kesaratagi village on the outskirts of Kalaburagi city early on Wednesday morning. Two police personnel were injured when the accused attacked them.

Superintendent of Police N. Shashikumar said that the accused, Mallikarjun Kadbur, was wanted in extortion and several murder cases. He was a close associate of rowdy sheeter Mallikarjun (Kari chirate) who was gunned down in a police encounter by Kalaburagi police last year.

The accused was involved in eight different cases including murder and robberies. Mallikarjun waylaid a two-wheeler rider and robbed him of a camera near Nandur village on Tuesday night.

The police team got a tip-off that Mallikarjun was hiding in Nandur and a team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural) S.S. Hullur rushed to the spot and surrounded him near Kesaratagi village.

Mallikarjun tried to escape and attacked two constables, Anil and Vishwanath, with a lethal weapon. In self-defence Sub-Inspector Parashuram opened fire, injuring Mallikarjun’s hand and leg.

The injured constables were shifted to a private hospital, while the accused was shifted to the District Government General Hospital. A case has been registered at the Gulbarga University Police Station.
