A group of youngsters from Belagola village, near Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, rescued an Indian rock python from near the Virija Canal on Tuesday evening.
The python is around six-ft-long and weighs 50 kg. Later, they handed over the reptile to officials of Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysore.
According to sources in the Department of Forests, the villagers spotted the snake in the canal while fishing and alerted the zoo officials. Later, the snake was caught with a net and gunny bags.
“It is a non-venomous reptile,” P. Lakshmeesha, Deputy Range Forest Officer (in-charge of the Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary), told The Hindu on Wednesday.
