Robbery-accused man escapes from Malur police station

A man accused in a robbery case and who was undergoing imprisonment in the Central Jail in Parappana Agrahara in Bangalore in connection with other cases, on Thursday escaped from the custody of Malur police.

The police gave the name of the escapee as Vijaykumar alias Viji.

Vijaykumar was taken into custody by Malur police on January 13 through a warrant in connection with a robbery in Malur reported a month ago, Superintendent of Police Ram Nivas Sepat told The Hindu .

He was to have been returned to the Central Prison, after interrogation. However, the accused, who was kept handcuffed in a cell at the police station, escaped from there in the early hours of Thursday.

Three teams have been formed to arrest Vijaykumar, Mr. Sepat said.

Inquiry He has directed Deputy Superintendent of Police to conduct an inquiry into the incident and ascertain whether police negligence helped the man escape from police custody.
