Students of the Regional Institute of Education (RIE), Mysuru, have called off their hunger strike after being assured by senior officials of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) of UGC recognition for their courses by the end of the current academic year.
The students, who had launched an agitation earlier this month by boycotting classes, had intensified their stir by going on a hunger strike from Tuesday.
NCERT Joint Director B.K. Tripathi arrived in the institute on Friday and assured the students of meeting their demands.
A member of the RIE students’ council said that Mr. Tripathi disclosed to the students them that the syllabus of the six-year M.Sc. Ed course had been approved by the NCERT as a first step towards seeking UGC recognition.
“He said the M.Sc. Ed course will secure UGC recognition by May this year before the present batch of students pass out,” the student representative said. “We will resume classes on Monday,” the student added.
Over 600 students had launched the agitation seeking recognition for M.Sc. Ed, B.Sc. Ed and BA Ed courses.
