The driving licences of 1,272 motorists across the city may get suspended for encroaching upon footpaths in the last four days.
The city police had conducted a special drive against footpath riders, following complaints on the twitter account of the city police chief from pedestrians.
Taking serious note of the growing number of violations, city Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi directed the traffic police to launch the drive to keep a check on erring motorists.
Footpaths across the city are in bad shape and shrinking day by day, making it difficult for pedestrians to use. This is mainly because motorists use the footpaths, forcing pedestrians to use the road leading to accidents, a senior police officer said. Anyone caught driving on the footpath will be slapped with a fine of Rs. 100 and their licence will be recommended for suspension, he said.
The city traffic police have registered over 8,500 cases against footpath riders in 2014.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Division) B. Rajendra Prasad said majority of the offenders are two-wheeler riders, followed by autorickshaws and cars.
“We are going to continue the drive and the jurisdictional traffic police have been instructed to strictly enforce the law to ensure road discipline,” Additional Commissioner of Police B. Dayananda said.
