It’s official now. The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences will be shifted from Bengaluru to Ramanagaram.
The work of moving various departments will begin on Sunday. All departments would be moved by June, 2017, according to Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who is district in-charge Minister of Ramanagram.
Mr. Shivakumar and Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil on Friday called on Governor Vajubhai Vala and discussed the issue. College managements have opposed the shifting and even submitted a petition to Mr. Vala.
Mr. Shivakumar told presspersons here on Saturday that the Governor wanted the government to safeguard the interest of students during the process. The JD(S)-BJP coalition government had taken the decision to shift the campus in 2006. Later, the State legislature passed a Bill and it become a law to ensure smooth shifting of the university.
Citing examples of shifting Visvesvaraya Technological University to Belagavi and Women’s Univeristy to Vijayapura, Mr. Shivakumar said no medical student would be affected since students have been studying in their respective medical colleges in various districts.
He said Ramangaram was part of Bengaluru before bifurcation of Bengaluru rural district. The Governor has been explained the necessity of shifting the university to the outskirts of the city. There has been delay in shifting owing to court cases and lack of commitment among the political leadership, the Minister added.
