A section of residents of Lakshmidevi Layout in K.R. Pet have been receiving contaminated water for the past several weeks as the pipelines supplying water to their houses have been damaged.

For the second consecutive day on Monday, a group of residents protested with vessels containing water infested with worms, demanding immediate solution to the drinking water crisis. They alleged that they have been consuming “highly contaminated water” and that the K.R. Pet Town Municipal Council (TMC) authorities have been neglecting their health issues.

TMC has been supplying water mixed with sewage owing to the damaged pipeline, a few residents told The Hindu on Monday. Over 50 houses have been receiving contaminated water. Residents at several houses have fallen ill and were treated at local hospitals, they alleged.

They demanded immediate solution from TMC, besides seeking intervention of the district administration in solving the problem. When contacted, TMC officials assured of taking steps to address the issue.

“We will collect water samples for tests and also check the pipeline,” an official said.
