Residents of Hanabal hobli in Sakleshpur taluk on Friday locked the Public Works Department office at Sakaleshpur, in protest against the alleged delay in taking up the repair and improvement of road connecting Sakleshpur with Hanjugudanahalli.

The 25-km stretch connecting Sakleshpur and Hanjugudanahalli was in a bad state for many years. On several occasions, the regular users of the stretch had demanded that the road be repaired immediately. H.C. Mahadevappa, Minister for Public Works and in-charge of the district, had performed the ground-breaking ceremony to start the work at a cost of Rs. 22 crore in December 2014. However, the work had not begun yet, they said.

The protesters staged a dharna in front of the PWD office after locking the doors. They raised slogans against the department. Nagaraj Naik, assistant executive engineer, met the protesters and assured that the work would begin in the first week of April. The protest was withdrawn following the official’s assurance.
