Rescue operations have continued for the third day to save Kaveri, a six-year-old girl who is stuck in an open borewell at Jhunjarwad village of Athani Taluk of Belagavi district.

According to officials camping at the spot, the girl is stuck at around 24 ft. in the 400-ft. open borewell and they have locked her arm with a rope to prevent her from slipping further down.

Meanwhile, the personnel of NDRF and Hatti Gold Mine are relentlessly working to bring out Kaveri. They have already drilled a vertical trench, and now drilling a horizontal tunnel to reach the girl.

The officials said that they were around five feet away from the spot where the girl is stuck; however hard rock has posed a new challenge. Had it been a soft terrain, it would have been easier to drill a hole and the team could have finished the job much earlier, they said.

Meanwhile, the camera let into the borewell did not capture any movement by the girl, leading to further anxiety among the family members and rescue workers.

The family members, mainly the mother, who is in trauma, are being treated by a medical team. The team is also attending to the rescue personnel, as they have been working continuously.

Amid this, the owner of the land, Shankarapppa Hippargi, who is accused of not closing the unyielding borewell, is absconding.
