November 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Hassan:

Unhappy with Dalits entering Sri Basaveshwara temple with the intervention of the government machinery, ‘upper caste’ people of Sigaranahalli in Holenarasipur taluk have imposed a social boycott on Dalits, according to a factual report submitted by the Social Welfare Department. Deputy Director N.R. Purushotham, on Monday, submitted a report to the deputy commissioner after a visit to the village. Deputy Commissioner Umesh H. Kusugal had sent a team of officials to the village on Saturday after Dalit families submitted a memorandum that social boycott had been imposed on them in the village. Shopkeepers had been asked not to sell essential goods to Dalits. They appealed to the district administration to make alternative arrangements for them to live peacefully in the village.
