Regional conference on ‘Science and Society’

A two-day regional conference on the theme ‘Science and Society’ is being organised by the Veerashaiva College along with Karnataka State Science and Technology Academy here from January 16 to 17.

P.T. Parmeshwar Naik, Minister of State for Labour and district in-charge, will be inaugurating the conference at the auditorium of Rao Bahadur Y. Mahabaleshwarappa Engineering College on January 16. Renowned scientists and experts in the field are expected to participate in the conference and present papers on a varied subject, according to P. Basavaraj, College Principal and A.M. Ravish of the Academy.

Prof. U.R. Rao, renowned space scientist and chairman of the Academy, would be delivering the key note address on the inaugural day followed by technical session in which Dr. R.R. Navalgund, former Director of Space Application Centre, ISRO, would be presenting a talk on ‘Satellite Remote Sensing for Sustainable Society’. G. S. Rautela, Director General National Council of Science Museums, Kolkata would speak on ‘Role of Science in Societal Welfare’.

Climate change and society topic would be dealt by R. Gopi Chandran, Director Vigyan Prasar, Noida; Chemistry in everyday life by Prof. K.J. Rao, Emeritus Professor from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Nutrition for Healthy and Sustainable Society by K.S. Srinivasan former General Manager of Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited, resilient dry-land systems for sustainable rural society by Prakash Bhat from Dharwad, Women in Science and Society by Geetha Bali, former Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka Women University, Hazardous Chemicals and Society by Dr. T. Venkatesh, from St. John’s Medical College Bangalore and Ecological Balance for sustainable society by Dr. Harish Bhat from Centre for Ecological Science, IISc Bangalore, they said.

Apart from that there would poster presentation and competition, where cash prizes would be given to the top three posters.

Around 500 delegates from all over the State, particularly from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, were expected to participate. There will be no delegate’s fee and free lodging and boarding would be provided.

Mr. Satish Babu, Chairman of College Governing Council, has appealed to the people connected with science and society to attend the conference.
