D. Javare Gowda, writer and former Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University, on Friday called upon the students to read the works of Kuvempu and imbibe the values that his works profess.
“Every day, you should remember him and read at least a few excerpts of his great works,” he said, after being felicitated at a function organised by the Government First Grade College for Women in Hassan.
Kuvempu’s life and works had been an inspiration to many people. Several of them had succeeded in their fields because they came under the influence of the great poet at an early stage of their lives, Mr. Gowda said. “I come from a humble background. Because of Kuvempu’s influence on me, I could contribute to Kannada language and literature,” he said.
Further, he described Basavanna and Kuvempu as two great personalities of the land. “Unfortunately, the present generation is ignoring the contributions of Basavanna. He was a great social reformer and had fought against the caste-based discrimination. Students should read Basavanna’s vachanas too,” he said.
The college authorities felicitated Mr. Gowda on the occasion.
