B.K. Sangameshwar, Bhadravati MLA, has announced that he will contest the Assembly elections as an Independent candidate. Mr. Sangameshwar was elected on Congress ticket in the 2008 Assembly elections and was an aspirant for party ticket this time also. The Congress has decided to field C.M. Ibrahim from Bhadravati Assembly constituency.
Mr. Sangameshwar’s supporters gathered before his house in Bhadravati City on Tuesday in large numbers and were visibly upset by the party decision. They moved in a protest march in the main streets of the city.
Mr. Sangameshwar addressed them and said: “Though the Congress leadership has neglected me, the people of Bhadravati want me to contest the elections. I will contest as an Independent candidate.”
Barring Bhadravathi, the Congress has fielded sitting MLAs in other constituencies. The opinion of local Congress activists was not considered while selecting the candidate for Bhadravati segment, he said.
Mr. Sangameshwar said though Mr. Ibrahim hails from Bhadravati, he had not been residing here for the last 30 years. As he is an outsider, the people of Bhadravati will not support him, he predicted.
