A drill on handling a series of bomb explosions gave a hands-on training to the 209 Rangers and Rovers at the Bharat Scouts and Guides Grounds at Alevoor near here on Monday.

As many as 102 Rovers and 107 Rangers are participating in the Mysuru Divisional Level Rovers and Rangers Training on Disaster Management here since July 30.

The drill began with a series of bomb explosions when a Kabbadi tournament was on. About four to five persons were “dead,” while some persons watching the tournament were “injured.” Those who played the role of dead and injured were also Rangers and Rovers. Soon the Rangers and Rovers swung into action.

They took the injured and others to a first aid camp. After giving first aid, they tied a red band to those fatally injured, yellow to those with major injuries but not life threatening ones, green bands to those with minor injuries and black bands to those dead.

They informed the Commandant of their camp soon after the incident. Meanwhile, soon after getting the information of the “explosions,” a fire tender and then four ambulances reached the spot. The rangers and rovers show their skills in quickly removing the “injured” and putting them on the ambulances, who are then taken to hospitals.

After the successful conduct of the drill, the personnel of the Fire and Emergency Services gave a demonstration of their fire fighting skills and explained how they dealt with different fire incidents.

Prabhat Kalkura, member, Asia-Pacific Disaster Management Team, International Federation of Red Cross, said that after the training, as many as 10 students each from the districts coming under the Mysuru Division were expected to be inducted into the respective District Disaster Management Teams and their services would be utilised. They had also been given training in providing psychological first aid besides physical first aid, he said.

The students participating in the camp were all praise for the training they received. Manoj Y.N., a student of D. Banumaiah’s College, Mysuru, said that the training given in all aspects of disaster management was excellent. “I have enjoyed every moment of the training here,” he said.

Naveen, a student of Manjunath Pai Memorial College, Karkala, said that he had got new insights on various issues of disaster management and mitigation. “This training has helped us all,” he said.
