Following the footsteps of her friends in the Kannada film industry — Ramya (Congress), Pooja Gandhi and Malavika Avinash (Janata Dal Secular) — actor Rakshita joined the yet-to-be-launched BSR Party, headed by Independent MLA B. Sriramulu.

Ms. Rakshita joined the former Minister's party at a formal function held here on Friday.

Her husband actor-director Prem and her mother were present.

Ms. Rakshita who has acted in all southern language films, made her debut in Appu opposite Puneet Rajkumar. After marrying director Prem, she was assisting him in his film productions.

Interestingly Ms. Rakshita entered politics on her fifth wedding anniversary. After joining the party Rakshita said: “A new chapter has commenced in her life. It is Mr. Sriramulu's helping nature and concern for the lower strata of the society made me to join BSR Party.”

She would work as a ordinary worker of the party for some time and would take a decision on contesting elections later.

“I will participate in the party's Gadag convention and tour the State,” she said.

To a query, she denied reports that Ambareesh played an important role in her joining the BSR Party.
