Raichur thirsty amid converging rivers

April 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:53 am IST - RAICHUR:

Despite being located between two converging rivers — the Krishna and the Tungabhadra which form the north and south borders of the district respectively — and having a wide network of canals from the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal and Narayanpur Right Bank Canal, Raichur district is facing an acute drinking water crisis.

The rivers and reservoirs have dried up and groundwater table has depleted further. Armies of people, irrespective of age, gender and status, can be seen fetching water from faraway places and quarrelling over their share of water in almost every village in the district.

Worst such crisis

Villages in Deodurg taluk are facing the worst drinking water crisis after the 1972–73 drought, with the Krishna dried up for the first time in the last four decades.

Most of the villages and even Deodurg town that are dependent of the river are facing acute drinking water crisis. Though the administration had opened clean drinking water units at 26 villages, most of them are defunct for various reasons, including lack of water sources and electricity connection.
