Criticising AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on women’s safety and empowerment during his recent tour of Karnataka, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Friday attacked him, terming him a “leader from Mars”.
Addressing a “Bharat Gellisi” rally on the outskirts of Hubli, Mr. Modi said the Congress leader was “behaving and talking as if he belonged to another nation”. “In my opinion, no country should have such ‘irresponsible leaders’,” he added.
Reacting to Mr. Gandhi’s remarks, he said when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was Prime Minister, women felt the “most safe”, and they were respected. He said the crime rate against women in Delhi is the highest at 70 per cent, while in Gujarat, it is less than 50 per cent of what it is in Delhi. Highlighting the role of women in nation building, he said if given due respect and opportunity, women are capable of contributing a great deal to the country.
Listing out his achievements in Gujarat, Mr. Modi appealed to the public to give him 60 months and said that he would achieve what the Congress could not do in 60 years of its rule.
‘Gandhiji’s wish’Before ending his speech, Mr. Modi urged the crowd to make try to fulfil Mahatma Gandhi’s last wishes. He said during his last days, Gandhiji wanted the Congress to be disbanded as the country had obtained freedom. He again urged the gathering to fulfil Gandhiji’s wish by voting for a “Congress-free India”.
