Question paper leak: HC advocate arrested

A practicing advocate of the Karnataka High Court, N.S. Hiremath has been arrested by the police in Kalaburagi in connection with the leakage of question paper of the written test of police constables held on November 16 throughout the state.

Superintendent of Police, Amit Singh told presspersons in Kalaburagi on Thursday that with the arrest of Hiremath, the total number of arrests in the case has gone up to 15. The total amount of cash seized from the arrested persons is Rs. 77 lakhs.

Mr. Singh said that no money was seized from Hiremath, who was picked up by the investigating police team on Wednesday. The arrested advocate practices at the principle seat of the Karnataka High court in Bangalore.

The arrested advocate would be produced before a magistrate on Thursday. Police will request custody for 15 days for further interrogation for information on the involvement of others. Mr. Singh said that the police did not have much time to question the advocate after his arrest late on Wednesday night.

To a question, Mr. Singh said that the police have clues on the whereabouts of two more prime accused in the case they would be nabbed within a week. The name of the advocate was revealed by the key accused Siddanna H. Devadurga who was arrested in a farm house at Hanchinal (SY) in Jewargi taluk in the last week of November. The police had recovered a sum of Rs. 73 lakhs from Siddanna Devadurga.

During the interrogation, Siddanna Devadurga revealed the names of Hiremath, Sadanand and Hanumantharaya. Incidentally, all the 14 arrested persons have been released on bail.

Mr. Singh answered question by saying that the CID was not investigating the case was being handled by the local police. One being asked whether any police personnel was involved in the leak, he said that except Moulali, a constable working in JP Nagar police station in Bengaluru, no other names of have cropped up so far.

Mr. Singh also said that the police have taken the main accused, gangster Shamsher, who was in judicial custody, to police custody in connection with the murder of another gangster, Mohammad Shabbir, on December 9. Shamsher was taken into police custody couple of days back and was being interrogated for his role in the murder of Mohammad Shabbir.
