Pumping of water in the two main pipelines from Thumbe vented dam to the city has started, according to Gokuldas Nayak, in-charge Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
He told The Hindu that pumping of water in one of the two 18 MGD (million gallons a day) capacity pipeline was started at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Pumping in another 18 MGD capacity pipeline was started about an hour later.
An engineer at the corporation said that water from one of the pipelines has reached the underground storage tank at Padil from where it would be let into distribution network to areas such as Padil, Yekkur, Jeppinamogaru, Attavar, Jeppu, Mangaladevi, and Morgan’s Gate. The engineer said that water from another pipeline was yet to reach the underground storage tank at Bendoorwell at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. From there it would be distributed to the heart of the city.
He said that normalcy in supply to the entire city would be re-stored from tonight.
The city did not have water for the consecutive fifth day on Wednesday as the main pipelines at Kannur developed cracks on Saturday evening due to dumping of soil and debris. The city corporation took five days to repair it.
