The public hearing, scheduled to be held on Thursday in connection with the establishment of a 350-megawatt thermal power plant by Chennai-based OPG Power Generation Company, has been deferred.

Official sources told The Hindu that the company came with a request to cancel the scheduled public hearing quoting certain reasons, including legal, which had remained unresolved.

Janapara Horata Samiti, a newly formed organisation comprising of people from all walks of life, had come out strongly against permitting the setting up of the thermal plant within the city corporation limits, apprehending threat to health, environment and ecology.

A new date for the public hearing would be announced only when the company submits an application in this regard.
