The public should immediately alert the police regarding anonymous phone calls they receive seeking confidential information about their bank accounts and ATM cards, Superintendent of Police Ravi Channannanavar has said.

He said that many people have lost their savings owing to money phishing activities. The public should not reveal confidential information related to their banking transaction to the anonymous callers. The police should be immediately intimated on such anonymous calls so that action can be initiated against the offenders, he said after inaugurating a workshop on information security and cyber law organised by Shivamogga District Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SDCCI) here on Saturday.

The advent in information technology (IT) has created new platform for social interaction and new business avenues.

It is unfortunate that cyber space is also being used for financial frauds and for defamatory endeavours.

In many cases of cyber crimes, the offenders operate in connivance with the bank officials and mobile service providers.

He stressed on the need to create awareness among the youths on the laws related to prevention of cyber crime.

Joint Director of District Industries Centre H.M. Srinivas, President of SDCCI D.S. Arun were present.
