The gap between the performance of urban and rural students in the II pre-university examination in Mysore district is narrow, results announced at the colleges on Tuesday indicate.
While 21,576 students (freshers) wrote the exam in urban areas, 15,485 of them cleared it, accounting for a pass percentage of 71.77 per cent. In comparison, 2,842 of the 4,346 students who wrote the examination from rural areas passed, a pass percentage of 65.36.
Deputy Director of the Pre-University Board K.M. Putta attributed this to the hard work of the students and teachers. The commitment from both sides to learn and teach was evident in the pass percentage that had increased by 10 percentage points, he said.
The numbers
A total of 32,246 students wrote the exam. Girls performed better than boys — 68.14 per cent girls passed, while the figure was 55.72 per cent for boys.
In rural areas, of the 2,694 girls who wrote the exam, 1,739 or 64.55 per cent passed, while of 2,586 boys, 1,300 or 50.23 per cent cleared the papers, as per statistics provided by the office of the Pre-University Board.
The pass percentages in the arts, commerce and science streams were 64.66 (6,551 passed), 77.56 (5,908 passed) and 71.78 (5,868 passed) respectively.
Toppers
Institutions such as Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala, Sadvidya PU College and Marimallappa Pre-university College have reported good performance by their students.
Pratiksha Nayak of Sadvidya PU College is the district topper. She scored 589 out of 600. Sumedh Ravi of the same college scored 583, with the unique distinction of scoring 100 out of 100 in physics, chemistry, mathematics and electronics.
Of the 853 students from Marimalappa college, 801 cleared the hurdle. M.R. Deeksha (583) topped the college in the science stream, while V. Ranjana (581) was the topper in commerce and S. Kavya (544) in arts.
Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala at Yadavgiri secured cent per cent results with all 53 students passing. Ankith Guruprasad and Nachiket Dixith scored 586. Vijaya Vittala Composite PU College too saw 265 out of 268 students clearing the exam.
