The decision of the State government to rename Gulbarga as Kalaburagi and issue a special gazette notification in this regard has sparked off protests in Kalaburagi city.
A few organisations that were opposed to the renaming of the city as Kalaburagi have demanded that the old name – Gulbarga – be retained.
On Saturday, the members of these organisations, who were staging a dharna outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office since Friday, decided to stage a rasta roko to protest against the renaming of the city.
When the protesters tried to block the main road, the police, who were in full strength, moved in swiftly and detained them. They were taken to the District Police Headquarters ground.
