Scores of people took out a protest march and staged a demonstration outside the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday, seeking houses under the Ashraya scheme.

The protesters, under the banner of the district unit of the Karnataka State Backward Community Association, gathered at the Kittur Chennamma Circle and marched to the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation building, holding placards and banners.

The protesters complained that hundreds of people belonging to the backward classes did not have a roof over their heads as they had not received benefits of schemes such as Ashraya.

They said that there were a large number of such people in the twin cities, and urged the administration to give priority to minorities and backward classes while allotting Ashraya houses.

President of the association Sainath Dudalkar urged corporation Commissioner Y.S. Patil to ensure that Ashraya houses were allotted to them at the earliest.
