Protest after death of under-trail in prison

Tension prevailed in the premises of District Government General Hospital Mortuary here on Friday after the family members and residents of Sedam town staged protest seeking action against the authorities of the Kalaburagi Central Prison for the mysterious death of an under-trail on Thursday evening.

Tavneer Patel (45), a daily wage labourer from Sedam town, died allegedly under mysterious circumstances, with injury marks on his body. This sparked off protests in the city on Friday.

Saira Banu, wife of the victim with her three children, Md.Rauf, Salman and Afsara and other residents of Sedam taluk, staged a protest for more than a hour outside the mortuary at Kalaburagi District Government General Hospital against police atrocity, which they alleged was the cause of the death.

The family members along with a few organisation demanded suspension of M. Sunder, Superintendent of Kalaburagi Central Prison.

The family also demanded an employment for the victim’s elder son Mohammad Rauf along with a compensation of Rs.10 lakh.

Former Minister S.K. Kanta and members of organisations including Itehad-E-Milat Association, Muslim Welfare Association and Lorry Drivers Association staged protest demanding inquiry.

Deputy Commissioner Vipul Bansal and Superintendent of police, Amit Singh also visited the mortuary.

Mr. Bansal assured that stringent action would be taken against those involved in the death of under trail victim.

B. Sowbhagya, Additional Civil Judge and Judial Magistrate Frist Class Kalaburagi conducted the inquest with team of medical officers.

Tanveer, a daily wage labour, was arrested on May 19 from Sedam and was produced before the District Magistrate and taken to the custody on charges of cheating.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr.Sunder said that there was no meal boycott or protest by the prison inmates. The allegations by the victims family are false and baseless, he added.
