Prohibitory orders have been imposed in poll-bound Gundlupet following the death of a farmer, who had consumed poison in protest against the alleged encroachment of his land by a private company.

The prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC will be in force from 6 a.m. on Tuesday till 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner B. Ramu told The Hindu that the ban orders had been imposed as a “precautionary” measure. Though gathering of five or more persons will be deemed “unlawful assembly,” Mr. Ramu clarified that election campaigns for which permission had already been obtained would be exempted from the prohibitory orders.

Nagesh, a farmer from Kaggalhundi village about 8 kms from Gundlupet, who had consumed poison when he was summoned by the police for an inquiry into the protest by farmers against acquisition of land for private company, died at a private hospital in Mysuru on Monday night. His body was taken to Chamarajanagar town on Tuesday before the last rites could be held in his native.

Meanwhile, campaigning for the elections continued in different parts of the constituency with BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa holding padayatras and road shows in several villages, while Congress candidate Geetha Mahadev Prasad too continued with her campaign to woo voters.
